Live the wildest adventure in the Cusco jungle: navigate the sacred Pongo de Mainique canyon along the Urubamba River and swim in the turquoise waters of the Yoyato River, inside Megantoni National Sanctuary. A unique 2-day experience in Peru.
The Pongo de Mainique (also written as Pongo de Maenique or Mainiqui) is one of the most impressive, sacred, and little-explored places in Peru. It is a spectacular canyon barely 45 meters wide, carved by the waters of the Urubamba River over thousands of years, where the last foothills of the Andes give way to the vast Amazon plain.
The name comes from the Quechua word punku, meaning "door" or "gateway" — and that is exactly what it is: a gateway between the Andean world and the Amazonian world, between the known and the wild. For the native Matsiguenka (Machiguenga) people, the Pongo is a sacred place where souls travel between this world and the spiritual realm, and where, according to their myths, the world was created.
Along its 3-kilometer route, the river drops dramatically with more than 30 waterfalls and cascades plunging from rock walls that reach up to 1,200 meters in height, surrounded by lush vegetation. Among the most famous is the Tonkini waterfall, with winding currents that sculpt the rock. This entire territory is part of the Megantoni National Sanctuary, recognized in 2021 by UNESCO as a Core Zone of the Avireri-Vraem Biosphere Reserve.
Before crossing the Pongo, our tour visits one of the most photogenic attractions of the entire expedition: the Yoyato River (also known locally as Yoyato). In the Matsiguenka language, "Yogué" means rainbow, and its waters truly live up to that name: a crystal-clear turquoise color, created by minerals carried down from the mountains, contrasting spectacularly with the deep green of the jungle.
Here you will have time to swim in its refreshing waters, take the best photos of your trip, and enjoy lunch with typical products from the Amazon region. It is the highlight of the first day of the tour.
Megantoni National Sanctuary is home to extraordinary biodiversity. During the canoe ride, our local guides will point out:
Birds: more than 378 recorded species, including the iconic Military Macaw (the reason the sanctuary was created), the Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Peru’s national bird), the Golden-tailed Sapphire, and dozens of hummingbirds and macaws.
Mammals: Red Howler Monkey, Maquisapa (spider monkey), Black Capuchin Monkey, Spectacled Bear, and the elusive Giant River Otter.
Flora: endemic orchids, mahogany, cedar, lupuna trees, palms, and a wide variety of medicinal plants such as dragon’s blood and cat’s claw.
We are a local agency with offices in Quillabamba — we know the territory better than anyone.
Certified guides with extensive knowledge of Matsiguenka culture.
Safe boats inspected for river navigation through the Pongo.
Small groups of up to 12 people for a more personal and safer experience.
Typical local meals included: from breakfast in Ivochote to dinner at the campsite.
The ideal season is between April and October (dry season). During these months, the flow of the Urubamba River is more stable, the waters of the Yoyato River show their most intense turquoise color, and navigation through the Pongo is safer. During the rainy season (January to March), strong whirlpools and currents make the Pongo one of the most dangerous river passages in Peru.
